East Africa - Shifting Grounds
For over a decade, photographer Reto Albertalli has collaborated with UNICEF to document displacement caused by armed conflict, chronic poverty, and climate-driven food insecurity. Shifting Grounds brings together photographs made between 2014 and 2025 in South Sudan, Chad, Rwanda, Burundi, and Madagascar. The series focuses on what happens between headlines: improvised shelter, interrupted schooling, food distribution, waiting, movement, and the informal systems of care that allow families, especially children, to survive prolonged instability.
